Apply Yourself... to Higher Ed
Rio Progress Workshops are designed to help you and your family understand the college application process and feel confident in the decisions you make throughout.
We know how hard applying to college can feel. There’s letters of recommendation, tests, essays, something called the FAFSA, EA and ED, and so many other acronyms that google doesn’t even understand. We have been there, and you are not alone.
Rio Progress Workshops
Rio Progress Workshops are designed to help you and your family understand the college application process and feel confident in the decisions you make throughout.
Our monthly workshops are free and open to any high school junior or senior who is thinking about higher education. We’ll go over admissions requirements, financial aid and scholarships, and selecting a school based on best fit. The best part? We host these in both English and Spanish, so your family can stay informed too!

As a member of our College Prep Cohort you will have one-on-one guidance through the college application process from drafting your college list through figuring out your first-year classes. Our goal is to ensure that you make the best match academically, personally, and financially.
Summer: We will help you create a customized college list that fits your interests, abilities, and goals. We will also work on standardized test prep and begin drafting the ever-important personal statement. With our tools and mentorship you will stay organized throughout the whole process so that you meet every deadline with ease.
Fall: We will help you submit applications for major scholarships including: The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, The Gates Foundation, and QuestBridge. In October we’ll make sure you complete your FAFSA application and help make the process less painful. We will meet on a weekly basis to perfect your personal statement and any additional writing supplements and submit those early action applications.
Winter: We will shift our focus to applying to scholarship opportunities to make the agonizing wait until you hear back from your top choices bearable…and to keep #gettingthebag.
Spring: Before you know it we’ll be waiting with baited breath for those excited screenshots, texts, and phone calls letting us know where you’ve been accepted. We’ll celebrate with you and help you decipher those financial aid offer letters with your family. By decision day, you’ll feel confident about the choice you’ve made and be ready to figure out the details about your new campus-home.
Beyond: But, our support won’t end there. We’ll stay in touch throughout the summer making sure you submit your housing applications, finalize your fall schedule, and even offer some optional “How To Adult” sessions to help you transition to your new environment. While in college you’ll benefit from the monthly alumni-check-ins where we’ll share study tips, career building resources, and internship advice as well as offer more general support and encouragement.
