In October we’ll make sure you complete your FAFSA application and help make the process less painful. We will meet on a weekly basis to perfect your personal statement and any additional writing supplements and submit those early action applications. **Winter:** We will shift our focus to applying to scholarship opportunities to make the agonizing wait until you hear back from your top choices bearable…and to keep #gettingthebag. **Spring:** Before you know it we’ll be waiting with baited breath for those excited screenshots, texts, and phone calls letting us know where you’ve been accepted. We’ll celebrate with you and help you decipher those financial aid offer letters with your family. All persons participating in any capacity shall abide by and conform to these professional standards: 🤲🏽 1\. Staff shall act honestly and ethically while in the performance of their duties. 🤝 2\. Staff shall treat all employees, volunteers, and community members with respect, courtesy, and dignity. 🌎 3\. Staff shall not discriminate and shall be respectful of race, color, national origin, age, disability, religion, or sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity). 🚫 4\. Staff shall not harass, bully, or mistreat staff, students, volunteers, or participants. 🚨 5\. Staff shall obey all applicable local, state, and federal laws, while acting on behalf of RP , including all laws and regulations that govern appropriate conduct in the workplace, and in an educational setting. 🙅🏾‍♂️ 6\. Staff shall deter wrongdoing and ensure accountability for adherence to the Code of Conduct. 🕵🏽 7\. Staff shall assist and cooperate with all RP investigations. 📢 8\. Staff shall report violations or suspected violations of the Code of Conduct. Violations should be reported to the assigned staff partner, their manager, or using the Anonymous Reporting form attached [here](https://www.cognitoforms.com/RioProgress/AnonymousIncidentReportForm?ref=rioprogress.org). ✋🏿 9\. Staff shall seek assistance if they have questions about any volunteer guidelines, including the Code of Conduct. If a staff member or volunteer has any questions or concerns about the code of conduct or wishes to file a formal complaint, they may contact RP at ethics@rioprogress.org ### Adherence to Policies RP develops these policies, procedures, and guidelines with input from both staff and volunteers and with consultation from legal, finance, and risk management experts; our policies, procedures, and guidelines are updated regularly as new information, situations, and events emerge. All participants in RioProgress are expected to comply with these policies including those described within this document. Failure to comply may be grounds for disqualification and/or removal. ### Bullying Bullying may rise to the level of harassment and is therefore prohibited. Bullying is defined as unwelcome or unreasonable behavior that demeans, intimidates, or humiliates people, either as individuals or as a group. Bullying behavior is often persistent and part of a pattern, but it can also occur as a single incident. Some examples of bullying behavior include but are not limited to: abusive and offensive language, insults, teasing, and spreading rumors. It can also include a manipulation of the work environment or psychological manipulation. ### Compliance Volunteers may be asked to complete paperwork, provide updated information (including proof of insurance), or complete a criminal background check for certain volunteer roles. Failure to complete these requirements may disqualify a volunteer from serving in a particular role. If appropriate based on the circumstances, volunteers who are disqualified for a volunteer role may have the option to explore other volunteer opportunities with RP with the approval from RP Directors. ### Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco use Business-related activities must be conducted free from the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs. In addition, these substances may not be possessed or distributed on RP premises or events. During business functions where alcohol is served, volunteers and employees are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Use of tobacco or e-cigarettes in RP offices, on RP premises, in vehicles, at RP events and functions, and while representing RP at any time or function is prohibited. While Medical and recreational marijuana use is legal in certain areas of the United States, federal and state laws indicate that RP is under no obligation to accommodate cannabis use in our offices or events. An employee/volunteer cannot report to the workplace impaired, nor should an employee/volunteer smell of marijuana per the expectation for scents and hygiene in the workplace. The workplace consists of all property and facilities owned, leased, or rented by RP, including grounds, buildings, vehicles, and any other equipment, and any site where an employee/volunteer performs work. Under the Drug-Free Workplace Act, employers must prohibit in the workplace the unlawful manufacture, distribution, possession, or use of controlled substances, including marijuana that is otherwise lawful under state law. If the employee/volunteer’s personal vehicle is parked within an area defined as the workplace, the rules governing a drug free workplace apply. If an employee/ volunteer parks in a private lot not under the control of RP, the employee/volunteer is subject to any applicable restrictions of the property owner and the laws applicable to marijuana in vehicles. ### Good Stewardship Serving in any capacity with RioProgress requires good judgement and management of reasonable risks. All staff will be given a general company orientation and a specific training to understand and manage the risks in carrying out their specific jobs. Our first group of students came to Mrs. Martinez looking for help with the SAT and completing their scholarship applications. Our first 'Cohort' consisted of brilliant young minds from the Brownsville ISD public school system who were left hanging for a moment, and we were happy to help them up. ![](https://rioprogress.org/content/images/2025/07/image-1.png) Our first cohort and their friends! RioProgress started the next week in a local coffee shop, and more students joined in. They were all trying to apply to college, get scholarships, or find a job after high school. They had the opportunity to talk to educators, professionals, and resources who had traveled the same roads they hoped to take in the next stage of their lives. At that time, there was no name, website, or a building with a neon sign on it. It was only a time, place, and a group chat. We immediately began working with our students to develop a program that helps them understand the gaps in their knowledge about the college application process. We guided them in setting realistic expectations, offered advice on selecting the right colleges, identified which majors are worth pursuing, and covered many other important details related to life on college campuses. We saw that access to more information, tutoring, and guidance led to better financial aid decisions, acceptances to prestigious schools, and an opportunity to lift other students up as they climb. Our students walked across the stage with access to six-digit scholarships and the opportunity to learn at the nation's top universities without carrying student debt past graduation. ## How we hope to make Progress! We learned a lesson that year: No matter how disorienting the storm may be or the challenges in our path, we can reach greater heights and go farther as long as we work hand in hand. RioProgress started off in 2023 to help high school seniors from a local public school in Brownsville. The students realized they were treading in uncharted territory. It was harder to find the resources for applying to college and scholarships. So our founder and the students decided that we would all work together, uplifting and helping each other through the strenuous process of applying to college. Now, we climb together in all areas college, careers, and more. We learned a lesson that year: No matter how disorienting the storm may be or the challenges in our path, we can reach greater heights and go farther as long as we work hand in hand. We learned that together, we can build a better future for ourselves, our families, and our communities. ## Our Mission ### Our goal is to help young people of the Rio Grande Valley figure out what they want to do after high school, apply themselves to the pursuit, and provide them the tools to ensure it is a financially smart decision and a smooth transition. I met Noel a few years ago at a college and career fair at the public library. From that first introduction, I knew we shared the same vision for our community: helping students realize their potential through accessible, affordable education. If you’ve been with us since the beginning, you probably know there’s always more I’d love to squeeze into our recordings than any podcast format can hold. So instead, you get my written rants—enjoy! **on who college is for** Noel mentioned in the episode that he sometimes felt overlooked because he wasn’t a top-ranking student. We’ve heard this from others in our community, too—even some of our own students. But here’s the truth: **there’s a college option for anyone who wants to go.** You might hear fear-mongering on social media—or even from teachers and counselors—that you need to be a near-perfect student to get into college or earn scholarships. **That’s not true** (and feel free to show them this post if they’re being mean about it). Yes, if you’re aiming for top-tier universities, the [process is highly competitive](https://features.thecrimson.com/2021/freshman-survey/academics-narrative/?ref=rioprogress.org). Their average SAT scores top 1400, and their extracurricular lists look superhuman. But schools like our very own UTRGV have *very* different requirements. In the [latest admitted class](https://www.utrgv.edu/admissions/freshman/index.htm?ref=rioprogress.org), the average ACT score was around 20, and less than half ranked in the top 25% of their high school class. That means more than half of UTRGV’s incoming students were considered “average” in high school. As for paying for school, full-ride merit scholarships at elite universities do demand excellence—but merit aid isn’t the only option. [Federal and state financial aid are based on need ](https://www.mytexasfuture.org/middle-high-school/explore-financial-aid/compare-types-of-aid/?ref=rioprogress.org)(with minimal grade requirements), and many institutions also provide need-based assistance that has nothing to do with your GPA. **TL;DR:** You don’t need straight A’s or a packed résumé to get into college and get help paying for it—**you just need to apply on time!** **on extracurriculars** One of the most underrated parts of college and career readiness is extracurricular involvement. These are the spaces where we discover what we like, why we enjoy it, and who we share it with. Noel and I shared [lessons from theatre](https://theatreanddance.appstate.edu/students/prospective-students/25-life-skills-learned-theatre?ref=rioprogress.org)—life is a stage, and you can always choose the character you want to embody. What you might not know is that I was the queen of unusual extracurriculars. Appalachian lap dulcimer lessons? Count me in. Current events UIL team? Absolutely. As my mom put it, I was a *“chile de todos los moles”*—and that love of being involved didn’t stop in high school. Once I got to college, I jumped right into campus life: joining cultural groups, helping build a nonprofit, working countless jobs, and even serving on the student council my senior year. So why do colleges actually care about this? Because extracurriculars show you’ll add to their community. You’ll get involved, contribute, care about issues, and help solve problems. You’ll also be more likely to persist when things get tough if you’re connected to peers and organizations. It’s easy to feel like you don’t have time for anything beyond academics, and yes, your grades and test scores matter. But don’t neglect the fun activities that build community and help you better understand yourself. **on "making money"** I was going to go on a huge spiel about this, but honestly Phil always says this part better, so look out for his article in your inbox this Saturday! **on the future of CAMP and similar resources** Unfortunately, shortly after we recorded this episode, [the federal government cut funding for TRIO programs](https://www.npr.org/2025/08/22/nx-s1-5501580/trump-proposes-cuts-programs-poor-students-colleges?ref=rioprogress.org)—including the [College Assistance for Migrants Program (CAMP)](https://www.instagram.com/p/DMejtgBOkCX/?ref=rioprogress.org) that Noel mentioned. TRIO has a long history, beginning with the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and the Higher Education Act of 1965, and these programs have been vital in communities like ours, where schools and families often lack the resources to support students fully. It’s a shame that initiatives designed to help those who need it most are being halted, cut, or criticized. At my public school, I was top of my class, loved reading, and was the nerdiest person you could imagine. I had no doubts about my academic ability at this new school—until my first writing-heavy course, where I earned my first “D.” The grade was not good, but what hurt more was the response when I asked for help. My teacher agreed, on the condition that I read my essay aloud so I could “hear my obvious mistakes.” At the same time, I hadn’t completed a single assigned reading that week—because I didn’t even know what a syllabus was or where to find it. In my old school, teachers always handed out assignments and wrote homework on the board. Suddenly, I felt like the worst, least capable student in the room. Here’s the truth: it wasn’t my fault. I had never been taught to write at that level. I had never been expected to manage a syllabus. I couldn’t have known what no one had shown me. But I grew. In Mr. McConnell’s history class, I became a stronger writer who could communicate ideas clearly. I learned to take feedback, to embrace discomfort, and to see being “the dumbest person in the room” as temporary. Eventually, I caught up to my peers—and even surpassed some. I graduated in the top half of my class, which felt like a huge accomplishment given where I started. Dance class, run club, book club—it doesn’t matter. Growth comes from putting yourself in places where you have the most to learn. And if you’re already in a space where everyone feels smarter than you, remember this: I showed up to class for a week without doing the reading, failed my first major assignment, had to read it aloud for feedback, and didn’t die of embarrassment. Having a bachelors degree means an **average gain** in earnings of $2.3 million over your lifetime, and it allows you to access more jobs and more flexible options in your early twenties when many in the valley choose to have a family or build their career. ### **What it means for your family:** In 2023, recent college graduates ages 22-27 earned **$24,000 more** per year than 22-27 year old's with only a high school degree. To put it into context, the average family of 4 in the valley has a household income of only **$44,307** (2022 dollars - [Census.gov](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/riograndecitycitytexas/POP060210?ref=rioprogress.org)). The opportunity cost is evident especially when there are so many free resources (like us) and scholarships that help you graduate debt free. ### **What it means for our community:** It means we have a chance at ensuring our community is resilient during economic downturns. Especially for those leaving college to apply for their first job. In our experience in RioProgress helping students and professionals enter the workforce, the job description is the first barrier applicants face before landing the job. > "I'm not qualified for this position" > "They're asking for someone with much more experience." > "I don't have the skills they are asking for" I hear it all the time, and its because most of these examples are true. You're not supposed to meet all of the requirements. This is the ideal candidate who often times doesn't exist. Take Sebastian Ramirez, creator of FastAPI. In 2020, he tweeted that he himself was not qualified for a job due to a lack of "years of experience." ![](https://rioprogress.org/content/images/2024/03/image-2.png) I saw a job post the other day. It required 4+ years of experience in FastAPI. I couldn't apply as I only have 1.5+ years of experience since I created that thing. Maybe it's time to re-evaluate that "years of experience = skill level". ![](https://rioprogress.org/content/images/2024/03/image.png) For the 1000th time, the description is always the unicorn candidate. Given the unicorns tend to be recruited by bigger fishes that don't even make public listing of their offers... Make your own conclusions I guess... ### How Does A Job Get Posted? We need to realize that the job description is not the whole story, and it is not the reason why you should refrain from submitting a job application. Let's briefly talk about how a job description gets made. **Step 1\.** Manager realizes they need someone to fill the position - they talk to finance to get budget and Human Resources (HR) for the job posting. **Step 2.** Talent Acquisition (TA) in HR asks the manager to describe the requirements of the job and the **ideal candidate**. **Step 3\.** Talent Acquisition uses standard language, and based on the proposed budget, will use a matrix to determine how many "years" of experience they expect from someone of that skill level and pay grade. **Step 4\.** Keywords and SEO practices are applied **so** that the job description gets traction on LinkedIn, indeed, and other jobs posting sites.Marketing may get involved to ensure the company persona is showcased through the job description. **Step 5\.** The job is published, often times looking completely different than what the manager posted in the first place. So, do not filter yourself out; picking the right candidate is not your job! ### Then How Do I Know I am Qualified? You are qualified if you understand the expectations of the work so that you can adapt your skills to the job with some learning time involved. Certain jobs require explicit credentials so don't apply to be a Doctor, Nurse, Lawyer, Stock Brokers, or Architects without getting or knowing how to obtain the necessary credentials. So this means look at jobs that you see yourself being able to execute at a comfortable level on a daily basis - with some opportunities for growth in there. Take this example of a generic job description with the help of ChatGPT. 🤖 ****Job Description:** We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a General Worker. The ideal candidate will assist in various tasks to support the smooth operation of our organization. This position requires adaptability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. ****Responsibilities:** 1\. Assist with a variety of tasks as needed to support operations. 2\. Follow instructions and guidelines to complete assigned duties efficiently and accurately. 3\. Work collaboratively with team members to achieve common goals and meet deadlines. 4\. Operate equipment and tools safely and effectively, following proper procedures. 5\. Maintain a clean and orderly work environment. 6\. Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers to coordinate tasks and ensure smooth operations **You are qualified for this job.** This role requires skills that you learn while in school, and through lived life experience. If there are technical skills needed, you will have to consider your ability to understand and apply those skills. Otherwise, every job is asking for you to be able to do the above! ### So How Should I Look at Job Descriptions? **Start with The Words** Look at the language of the job description. Most descriptions will describe a set of experiences and certifications that are required (must-haves), as well as preferred (nice-to-haves). Missing the "nice to haves" do not make you underqualified! The nice to haves are to help you understand what knowledge is expected from you. **Example:** In many cases, job posts request that you have a bachelors degree in a relevant field. This is usually a soft requirements or a recommendation. Instead they expect the caliber of work from someone who has spent the same amount of time learning and using tools at that level. In software development and tech especially, many people who are highly skilled at coding do not have a college degree. Its the reason why various tech startups and businesses are founded by people who did not complete college. [You Don’t Need a College Degree to Land a Great JobNot having a college degree shouldn’t diminish your chances of securing a good job. One of the best ways to move forward is to create a strong social media presence. It will help you stand out, get noticed by potential employers, and find a job you want. Start by auditing your social media profiles. Make sure your profile picture looks professional and real. When you share your work experiences, ensure that they match your résumé. Don’t hesitate to include any additional details about your jobs (such as additional responsibilities, awards, etc.) that you couldn’t fit on your résumé. Pay attention to the people you follow. Connect with industry leaders and potential employers, especially on platforms like LinkedIn. Like, share, and respond to their updates. Prove your passion. Follow hashtags and discussions and stay abreast with the latest industry news. Focus on the content you share, write, and post. When you see an interesting topic, repost the articles and share your commentary or thoughts. Finally, learn new skills and show them off on social platforms. Did you just learn Adobe Illustrator? Share a certification or a new project you completed as part of the course. Know that you don’t have to be an expert to share your skills. Befriend the office workers. This office can help keep you in the loop of how to ensure those are expedited. ### Get Oriented (Geographically) Figure out where your dorm is in relation to your classes, familiarize yourself with the quickest paths to and from your classes, and please figure out where the bathrooms are (ideally before you need them). Your first week of classes might be packed, you may be stressing about the location of the different rooms, during orientation take mental notes of where everything is so you're not late for your first week. ### Call Your People They are probably wondering how you are handling, might be a good idea to call them on the first night and let them know you're okay! ☎️ It is not uncommon for parents and family members to call your RA, an administrator, or even the police just to get you on the phone. So if you know how your folks are... call them to save everyone the hassle. Please (: ### Bonus Points: *Get Some Sleep* *You will be tempted to want to do everything and hang out with everyone, but try to make sure you're getting enough sleep! This is a great time to get your body moving: take a dance class, go on a walk, play ultimate frisbee. ### Visit the Career Center Every college or university has an office dedicated to helping you find great jobs after graduation, the problem is most students don't visit it until senior year (if they visit at all). A career center may host resume workshops, networking events, help you prepare for interviews, and even keep a list of internship opportunities for underclassmen. Some career centers even keep gently used professional clothing that they can loan out for interviews! ### Go to Office Hours Office hours are designated times when professors are literally sitting in their office waiting for students to come speak with them. We recommend you attend these as early as possible in the semester, but this is a good time to check in and maybe even get some extra help for the upcoming midterms. Don't be shy, this is part of a professor's job description. You're not inconveniencing them by showing up. Remember that asking questions is an essential part of learning! Don't know how to start the conversation? Bring in those pesky problem set questions you haven't been able to understand or the essay prompt you're stuck on. 👩‍🏫 Say **"Hello Professor, I'm having trouble with \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ could you help me through the process again?"* ****or if you're totally chill with the class material say** "**Hello Professor, I found \[insert topic here\] that you discussed in lecture the other day fascinating, could you share a bit more about your research/studies/thought process?"* ### Book Holiday Travel Look at your syllabus, your school's finals schedule, and talk to your professors to figure out when you'll be able to leave campus for the holidays. Use google flights to compare prices and book your travel early. Keeping your study location fresh can actually help you not fall asleep while studying and aid in recall. ### Drink water, eat greens, get sunshine, get sleep. One of the best pieces of advice I received in college was this: treat yourself like a plant. If you're wilting you're probably in need of water, nutrients, sunshine, or rest. This is the time when it is tempting to chug coffee and energy drinks, pull all-nighters, and snack on nothing but candy and fries. While this is usually part of the college experience, don't forget to throw some good-for-you things in there. Alternate between water and caffeine, have a salad with the fries, and please if you take nothing else: get some sleep! 🧠 Bonus tip: read over your notes or jot down some thoughts before you go to sleep. Science shows that your brain can help you processes problems in your dreams so you may find it easier to solve a tough equation or recall some dates in the morning after some rest. ### Wash your sheets! Here's the deal: the process is easier if you start earlier. ### Research Schools Don't limit yourself to schools nearby. While your home state may house some of the best schools in the country, depending on your program of studies, there may be better programs suited for you elsewhere! Consider the location of a school, its size, the community, and the cost of living. All of these factors will impact your final decision, so it's good to know more now rather than later. 🗺️ ****Really think about the location.** Your chosen school (for most) is a commitment to a location for the next 4 years. If you choose to go far from home, really consider the impact the climate, the culture, and local community may have on you. ### Start Paying Attention Colleges & Universities are constantly posting and sharing information about their programs, facilities, and student events. Pay attention since student testimonials and valuable programs are mentioned and highlighted in their social media. 🔭 Read between the lines though! Schools have large marketing budgets to make their programs look interesting, keep an eye out! ### Get your standardized tests out of the way Study and take the exams at least twice before the start of your senior year. When your final year of High School comes around, there are much more important things like essay writing, graduation requirements, prom, and other senior year events that will stress you out. The SAT/ACT should not be one of them! 😓 Senior year is already super difficult, there is no need to add more to it! **Things to Consider:** - The best advice I ever received when applying to college was: "Build a good college list, make sure every school is one you'd be happy to attend. If you like every school from your reaches to your safeties, then you won't be stressed when decisions time comes." - Writing is a process that becomes easier with practice, and harder to more you procrastinate - "Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. I was born, raised, and educated in the RGV until I got to high school when worlds of possibility opened up. I was named a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar which allowed me to start exploring educational opportunities outside of the valley. Shortly after, I attended a prestigious boarding school , went on to Columbia University for my bachelor's degree, and most recently received my Masters in Education from Harvard all of it for free. I do not say this to brag, but to show you that it is possible. I attribute my success largely to the community right here in the RGV that gave me the tools I would need in the future to succeed. This is where I grew my roots and my wings. I was away from home for six years in total, and returned because one of the most important lessons I learned while gone was the importance of bringing others with you. While the RGV molded me, it was leaving home that taught me my purpose. I am determined to help others experience the wonders of a high quality education so that they too may find their path and run with it. This relationship can serve you in the long run since this person may be an advocate for you, as well as provide you with tips and feedback. ### The Flyer Brochures are essential tools for evaluating job opportunities. They contain a company's marketing, information, and contact details, all designed to pique your interest in working for them. Make sure to collect brochures from the businesses that are relevant to your industry. Avoid collecting them from every single business. The brochures often have a specific link that you can use to apply for the job, which increases your chances of landing the position. ### The Business Card A business card from a hiring manager, recruiter, or university alum is highly valuable. It's a sign that they want to stay in touch. Make sure to thank them for the card, double-check that the contact information is correct, and store it immediately in your wallet or purse. This is an international sign of gratitude and respect. ## Step 5 - The Follow Up 📧 Send a Thank You email or apply for the position within 48 hours after the career fair.
